"....the work seen was interesting and relevant to the TV industry. Recent links with the industry (BBC - Songs of Praise, etc.) indicate that the industry – always wary of education - is aware of this programme and the standard of work produced by the team and crews. This link will be strengthened, adding to the unique position of the provision..."

"I am still of the opinion that this programme is virtually unique, and offers students a real chance for working in the industry, more realistic than any other of the 60 centres I have visited over time." [External Examiner's Report]

The FD TV Production Course provides two years of dynamic, ‘hands-on’ practice in the techniques that underlie modern broadcasting. Our aim is simple: to equip students with the skills and experience which make them “employable” within the broadcast media industries.

Great emphasis is placed on building both technical and teamwork skills during the first year of the course across an extremely wide range of ongoing ‘live’ broadcast opportunities which gradually build in both scale and complexity. Students are encouraged to engage with both traditional and emerging digital technologies and see how they interface with traditional TV Studio techniques. Much of the tuition on the course takes place in and around the College’s fully-equipped Television studios and post-production complex using a wide variety of industry-standard equipment. There are also multiple opportunities for outside broadcast work on ‘live’ events both within the College and at events off-campus. Recent highlights include several series of live webcast television, a large-scale awards ceremony (modelled on the Oscars!) and a 24 hour charity telethon broadcast live on the internet, and watched across the world (you can see some of these events in action in the "news" section of this website).

A key part of the Foundation Degree is work-related: we've forged excellent ongoing "partnership" arrangements with the BBC and an ever-increasing number of local independent programme makers with whom we enjoy active working links and students have been recruited by them directly after graduation. Alternatively, the Foundation Degree structure means that you can choose to extend your studies with a top-up year to full honours degree level.

We have found that our unique practice-led experience has proved popular with employers and universities alike. Check out the testimonials from former students.

Year 1 Great emphasis on teamwork and studio operations; the crucial role of each person on a TV Studio crew. The chance to research, shoot, direct and edit your own programme content for transmission “live”. You’ll make new friends. You’ll realise and develop your own strengths (and develop your weaknesses!). You’ll explore production and post-production techniques. You’ll be part of a tight-knit team on a number of Outside Broadcasts. Above all, you’ll develop your skills and value those of the team around you.

Year 2 The second year of the course is much more self-directed, developing opportunities to create professional-standard material for showreel and portfolio which aims to demonstrate a genuine ‘engagement’ with the real-world of professional broadcasting. With a greater focus on you as an individual programme-maker you’ll develop your Producer skills on a challenging live TV programme. You’ll direct a crew and actors. Crucially, you’ll undertake a number of work experience opportunities within the industry itself, as well as a substantial documentary project which will involve you in the research and negotiation required to get a TV programme broadcast, and then you’ll follow-through by making the programme. You’ll learn about how to promote yourself as a media practitioner and develop materials of your own to support your employability. You’ll network, and develop your own contacts within the industry.
